Janko Hanushevsky, electric bassist

Janko Hanushevsky was born in Linz/Austria in 1978. At age five he started to play the cello and exchanged it for electric bass in 1994. He studied Jazzbass at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna from 1997-2002 and has been a student of Contrabassvirtuoso and composer Peter Herbert for more than ten years. Since 2001 he has been exploring "extended techniques”, searching for different, unconventional ways of creating sounds on the electric bass. Janko has been playing numberless concerts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy mainly in contemporary jazz and free improvised music. He composes music for theatre (a.o. schauspielfrankfurt, Muenchner Volkstheater) and has been a regular member in many different bands. Since 2002 he has been working with Eva Pöpplein as Merzouga. He lives in Cologne.

Eva Pöpplein, computer musician

Eva Pöpplein was born in Munich in  1978. Her musical training started at the age of 5 on recorder, violin and piano.
From 1997 to 2003 she studied Tonmeister (recording engineer) at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Jürg Jecklin.
She lives in Cologne and works as sound engineer and as computer musician (free improvised music, compositions of electronic music for opera-, theatrepoductions and radio/radioplay, radioart). She has been working with electric bassist Janko Hanushevsky in their highly productive duo Merzouga. Since the end of 2006 she has been working as sound-engineer for the nationwide radiostation Deutschlandfunk in Cologne. Since 2008 she has been teaching classes at the Fachhochschule Darmstadt, Department Media.
